Location:

Ottawa, ON

Built By:

PCL Constructors Canada Inc.
Project Description

This 9,300 square metre Canadian Tire store is a two-storey retail complex built on a suspended concrete slab, with full development of a 6.0 acre site. The development includes a 1,600 square metre undesignated Commercial Retail Unit (CRU) space (5 units, one in a separate building), all at grade. Also included is a 1,250 square metre designated CRU space for Mark's Work Warehouse, also at grade (base building only).  A total of 351 parking stalls were added under the building at grade and exterior footprint.

The buildings are supported on drilled footings/caissons. The concrete strength of these footings is 30 MPa, and they are carried down to natural sound rock capable of sustaining an allowable soil bearing pressure of 2.4 MPa minimum.

The structure of all included buildings was created with a combination of cast-in-place concrete, as well as structural steel. The first floor of Canadian Tire's main building and the garden centre is structurally supported by cast-in-place concrete. Structural steel was used to build the framing structure of the second floor of the Canadian Tire main building, as well as the Auto Centre and Building D. The roof system is made up of metal decking and insulation, covered by a roof membrane and ballast (EPDM System).  The building envelope consists of precast concrete panels, smooth precast concrete, tinted spandrel glazed curtain wall, Shouldice Chamoir Tapestry masonry, prefinished metal siding, and Exterior Insulation Finishing System (EIFS - which provides exterior walls with an insulated finished surface and waterproofing).
