PCL was awarded a construction management services contract for the new 667,000 sq. ft. Passenger Terminal Building at the Ottawa Macdonald-Cartier International Airport as part of the overall Airport Expansion Program.
The architecturally exposed structural steel roof frames span the open concept design. Stone, curtainwall, fibre cement and aluminum panels will clad the modern exterior facade.
Emphasis has been placed on the passenger experience and express service with a high tech presence. “Smart” building systems (baggage, security, fire alarm, CCTV, public address and building automation) are integrated through “back bone” to a common point for control and interface. Mirror lights will compliment the expansive baggage claim area. The departures roadway feeds passengers to the Level 3 check-in area. The two (2) bridges from the parkade will protect the passengers from the elements as they enter the terminal building at the hold room level. Six (6) new commuter gates and eight (8) glass walled fixed bridges carry the passengers to the apron drive bridges and onto their aircraft.
The terminal building has plans for a South extension and a separate North expansion with an addition to the processing facility. The existing airport will be demolished with the South extension. Until then, the existing building will provide holdroom and departure gates for passengers processed in the new terminal. A temporary link bridge is included to accommodate this interm use of the building.
