Project Features/Highlights
Centrepiece of the coliseum is a new 20-foot-high roof comprised of nine, 200-foot-long transverse tie-arched trusses. The roof is supported with horizontal steel bracing that transfers the lateral loads to the coliseum's existing perimeter masonry walls. Other key project elements included removing the existing roof; lowering the existing rink slab by five feet; increasing the seating capacity from 6,500 to 10,000 seats and accommodating six different uses including hockey, figure skating, equestrian competitions and a one-million-gallon indoor lake. Other work included adding 38 private boxes and renovating and updating the concourse levels with new concession bars and a VIP lounge. Project Description
This design-build project consisted of the renovation of the existing Coliseum Building Arena located on the Canadian National Exhibition grounds. The Coliseum was originally built in 1921-1925 and has since had many renovations. It currently houses such events as the Royal Winter Fair, Sportsman Show and Boat Show. The original Coliseum had an approximate seating capacity of 6,500 and included a concourse event level and upper concourse level at the top row of seating. The facility has now been expanded to 10,000 seats and includes an ice rink, concession stands, club seating and private suites. It is used as a multi-functional facility for ice hockey, concerts, trade shows and other events.
