Ottawa Congress Centre Redevelopment

Location:

Ottawa, ON

Built By:

PCL Constructors Canada Inc.
Project Description

The new facility will provide a Tier II convention centre providing a total area of approximately 34,000 m2 with 20,000 m2 of rentable meeting and convention floors supported by kitchen, storage, administration and related support space.  The redevelopment program consists of demolition of the existing facility, design and construction of the new facility, as well as an interim financing component.  The all-new Ottawa Congress Centre will rise on its existing location in the heart of Canada's Capital, surrounded by national sites, cultural treasures, natural beauty and the city's relaxed urban vibe. A sweeping curved façade will afford panoramic views of Parliament Hill, the Rideau Canal UNESCO World Heritage Site, Confederation Square, and the National Arts Centre. Delegates will step outside and be just moments away from recreational paths and the ByWard Market shopping and restaurant district—not to mention 6,000 downtown hotel rooms. And the facility will be directly linked to the 180-store Rideau Centre, the 495-room Westin Ottawa, and ample indoor parking. The new Centre will set new standards for environmental design and sustainable practices, will serve guests with advanced technology, and will provide a landmark setting for memorable meetings for decades to come.  A bold, modern design, a bright naturally-lit interior, magnificent views…the all-new Ottawa Congress Centre will offer an unparalleled setting and support for meetings both large and small. Conceived and designed with direct input from professional meeting planners, the Centre will house approximately 200,000 square feet of highly flexible leasable space including approximately 80,000 sf of contiguous space.  The facility will be outfitted throughout with the latest in technology and telecommunications, and will be fully accessible. Additionally, it will be built to LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) Silver Certification standards and adhere to sustainable practices when it opens its doors in April 2011.  Site planning, safe and efficient water systems, renewable energy efficiency, conservation of materials and resources, and indoor air quality will be a “green” component of the redevelopment as well as a lifecycle renewal process in place for a continuous updating of the new convention centre throughout the life of the building.
